Erris searches for facts and anecdotes for us that we can discover while cycling through the North Holland landscape.

Under the motto ‘listen to the mills, they show us the way’ we learn something about the past and we can wonder where we are now. Will we still be looking at grassland and tulip fields in a hundred years’ time or will our feet be wet?

Because it may be a bit exaggerated to cycle past all those windmills, columnist Roos Schlikker does this for us. She keeps us informed via a podcast, in combination with the stories that Erris digs up.

Of course you can also cycle parts of the route yourself and, for example, visit De Herder in Medemblik. In a historic location, in the middle of the beautiful West Frisian Omringdijk. This is the Netherlands on a postcard.

With a bit of luck the miller will grind flour there, otherwise you can drink a cup of coffee in the cute Poorthuisje, which is next to De Herder. Erris: “Such a beautiful example. That mill was already there when VOC ships were still sailing in the Zuiderzee on the other side of the dike. Then came the reclamation, later a greenhouse area and the windmills. Past and present come together. You can see it here.”

Windmill De Ambtenaar – within walking distance of De Herder – was the largest in Europe for a while and although this project is mainly about our heritage, Erris will certainly mention the ultra-modern variant. “The great thing is that the two do not fight, they support each other. I think that’s very smart.”

Resistance to wind turbines is nothing new. “That was already happening in the past. No one had heard of heritage or tourism. That makes you look with different eyes. Now we want to keep our mills. Or we’ll talk about it later

The Civil Servant think? Could be. A mill is an icon and people attach themselves to it.” Fortunately, the municipality of Medemblik has another beautiful icon.
